Statement of Intent.
What is my chosen theme
My chosen theme for my GCSE main project is going to be around Landscape and I am going to look at different types of landscape, such as lakes, trees, miniature landscapes, urban landscapes and possibly even my own local landscape. I have chosen to do this theme because I really enjoy it and you get amazing photos from it as it will allow me to be creative. I am surrounded by different landscapes such as parks, natural landscapes and urban landscapes. I may do a mixture of different locations to stretch my work, this is an open brief that will allow me to try out lots of different techniques.
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme
In order to produce a successful, creative and individual final main project, I need to start by doing some in-depth research around my chosen theme. The way I am going to do this is by Going onto the internet and research famous photographers who use landscape as their theme and Look at magazines and books to inspire me also I could use Mood boards and Mind maps, 3 photographers i will use to help me are, Martin Laure, Ann Strickland and Lucie Averill who all focus on landscape photography and inspire me a lot. I hope to explore lots of different options so that I build up intricate understanding of my chosen theme
I need to have a wide range of research using a variety of different media, to ensure that my project is well informed and in-depth. This will allow me to create a successful project and will help inspire me/ influence me
My main aim is to create a project that is very personal to me and one where I can explore and develop my photography techniques and skills. I am going to use my Weebly personal photography website to record all of my ideas
What photoshoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to capture a wide range of different shoots for this project. In year 10 we went to the Lake District and focused on capturing the natural landscape, focusing on the autumn colors and soft light. I may try and do some studio shoots that explore texture in the landscape, such as close-up of flowers, lights and people.
I could use my portrait techniques and combine it with my landscape to create my own fantasy worlds. I am also interested in exploring posters as I feel this will allow me to use my photoshop techniques and so may need to do another location shoot.
I might also take my work on a journey and create collage landscapes to extend my outcomes.
What techniques with the camera and photoshop am I going to use to develop my theme
Throughout my project I intend to use as many processes and techniques as possible to gain a high quality project. When I am using my camera I will leave it on the manual setting so that I can change / control the images I am taking. If I am taking photos outside, I will have to constantly check my iso, white balance, shutter speed, and aperture because the light is going to change all the time.
I can develop / refine / explore creative techniques to enhance my work.
I will use:
Photoshop
Aperture
White balance
Shutter speed
Iso
Rule of thirds 9composition)
Exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed)
When I am using photoshop I hope to use: Layers, opacity, brush tools, dodge & burn, saturation, sharpener, blur tool, spot healing tool,
Could use my mobile phone to extend my knowledge further and manipulate images using Snap seed, Lens flare.
What do I hope to learn more about in doing this project
By doing this project, I hope to learn more about the theme of Landscape but also how to take my work on a journey and create a really personal and meaningful project. In order to do this I am going to try get out into different landscape areas to be able to take outstanding photos to be able to photoshop and make them look even better.
I will also:
Explore using the camera on manual settings
Photoshop tutorials
Personal shoots finding the correct location and props
Creating more unique and individual images
Mobile phone
video/ short film
I can see my finally gallery looking outstanding and high quality with various photos of landscapes to present. And I think its going to be a gallery of images and I will set it out to look like a pattern just to make the whole gallery look really professional.

Sunrise over Haystacks, Buttermere by Martin Lawrence
Composition:
It is clear that in this image Rule of thirds has been used because the mountains are in the top third and the water is in two thirds, The impact this image makes, is that its really clear and frames the small house in the middle and the tree is scaled to catch your attention as it goes from tall to medium to small. There are also Strong leading lines from the gravel shoreline, mountains, trees running down the hill and the building. I think that this makes the image clean and looks really neat and steady. And the Trees mirror reflection from the water creates a pattern and has almost like a line of symmetry going right down the middle of the lake Which helps the composition because if creates a pattern which then really does stand out to people. The colours are quite soft and warm colours, The reason being could be cause of the time it was taken and in my opinion I think it was taken in the morning just when the sun starts to come out, personally to me I firmly believe this could have been taken around summer time as the trees have all their bright green leaves and the sun is shining. There are a few vanishing points one is the small white house and a few others are in the distance the mountains its just draws your eyes to it. To do this the photographer may have used a telescopic lens as everything is in Sharp focus with a deep depth of field (f36). The picture looks like it may have been taken at eye Height which is great because you get the whole frame and background of the image, Foreground is the water, mid ground is the gates on the RHS of the picture, distance is the mountains and getting the trees directly in the middle makes the image stand out makes if eye catching especially the way the trees are set out. I like this image because it really inspires me to do the layout etc. and it is just really eye catching and will help me with my work in lesson.
Comment
I like this photographers image especially because it stands out a lot and they have managed to get every little detail inside this one photograph and it really shows the beauty behind nature, This also links really well with my photography because we have been to the lake district and taken a lot of photos at the lake and this image is also taken near a lake which has given me a boost with what to do with mine.

I am going to look at a range of different landscape photographers. The reason I have chosen to look at Martin Lawrence’s work first is because, he took photographs of the Lake District which is an area I have been to (plan to go to) and so will use his work to inspire my own photographs. Martin focuses on capturing the beauty of nature and also looks at composition to frame his images. I hope to do something similar when I go out on location. He also seems to try and capture different times of the day, different seasons and different light, this is something I hope to do with my own work.
I am going to start my photography with looking at a landscape in Autumn to capture the golden light and the beautiful colours and so I am using Martin’s work to help me think about how to frame my shots
Having to use the camera on manual setting so I have to keep checking or changing
This is something that Martin will of had to do when taking his photographs.
Context
I have been researching Martin Lawrence on the internet and this is what I've found "Martin is one of the UK's leading photographers specializing in landscape photography and wildlife images of the English Lake District and Scotland. He has worked as a professional photographer since 2005 and is well known for his images and articles, which appear widely both on-line and in books, magazines, calendars and the UK photography press."

Context
I found this information from the internet 'Martin Lawrence is a landscape photographer who sells his work in magazines, and in collectors. when Laurence was a kid he used to draw birds in his garden but realized he wasn’t very good at it and didn't have the skills. so he decided to take pictures of birds instead and he was more better at that than drawings. His parents bought his first camera. He said in an interview that he really liked his job because he was 'able to see the world in all its seasons' and he extremely liked being a landscape photographer. Also In 2008 he introduced one to one and small digital group landscape photography workshops. He mentioned that he liked going around the world taking photographs.'
Composition
It is clear that Martin Lawrence has created a strong composition, by using the rule of thirds where we can see one third is the sky and two thirds is the water. Because the tree is in the middle of the image it helps to pull your eye your eye to that object. You can also see there is a mountain in the distance on the left-hand side creating a rule of thirds effect.
The photographer has used vanishing lines to create a sweet spot, this is created by the line of the water and the grass edge, leading your eye to the right-hand corner of the image.
I really like the way the photographer has caught the reflection of the tree, it is flawlessly, which creates a mirrored reflection and makes the photo more interesting. The reflection makes the image look stiller and clearer and helps it stand out more.
Looking at the photo the colours are soft and mainly green and golden which makes me think it might have been taken in early Autumn. Although the colours are in harmony, the yellow of the grass stands out because the light is catching it and making it contrast against the soft water. The photographer has chosen a time which seems like the afternoon to go out and took this photograph.
Looking at the sky, he has captured beautiful radiating colours, a bit like flowing water. There are strong diagonal lines in the sky and the white of the clouds act as a contrast and highlights the trees, making them stand out.
There is a foreground in this image which is the water which seems to also have dark hallow grass in it. The midground is where the tree is sitting in the center of the lake, pulling your eye into the center of the image. You can see the trees and the mountains in the far distance which gives to the photograph.
In my opinion, I think he may have used a tripod as the image is so clear and still. I think the lens on the camera would have to be telescopic as everything is in view, crisp and clear. I think the aperture would have to be set to a high Fstop and if it is on a tripod, the shutter speed could be lower as the time of day is in the golden hour and so light levels will be lower.
comment
Overall, I like the image because it works well with what I want to do in my photography meaning landscape and I also really like all the colours in the image as they all go really well with each other. I also want to be doing Landscape photography pictures which makes it another reason I could focus on these type of photographs the different types of compositions in this image also really helps to make the image stand out a lot like the tree having the rules of third effect is really good and smart because you'd firstly look at the Centre image when u look at a photo. In conclusion I do like this photography however I would rather stick to posters as I believe I have that skill with photoshop better than the skill of taking pictures however I would like to make this an outcome of mine.

Further afield I lead several photography tours a year to stunning locations around the world including Iceland, Canada, USA and Madeira.' He also said 'my passion for landscape photography grew I decided to focus on photographing my local area where I could spend more time behind the camera and less time behind the wheel. Close proximity and local knowledge meant I could respond to changing weather, learn quicker from my mistakes and build up both my portfolio and experience by returning to locations again and again. The image has a fore ground which is the castle in the forest which is reflected in the water,in the middle ground is the castle and forest which is the central focal point. In the background you can see the shadowy affect of the trees in the light blue sky. The vanishing point is where the sky and water meet on the left hand side of the image, and there's a horizontal line which cuts the image in half from where the castle and forest really is. Rule of thirds is also shown in the image because the castle and forest is in the center, where the lines meet are on the left hand side and the trees and hill is on the right hand side. This image must have been taken around the afternoon as its still abit light and not completely dark. I think this image must've been taken on a tripod as its clearly a still image and at an eye level. So he must've used a wide lenses to capture the whole image in one picture. I Think the aperture must've been f20 as the image was in focus and has a slight blur in the back of the image. And all the colours shown in the photograph are cold colours which gives a cold gloomy winter effect to the image.

i like the composition of this image as the way its been set out it makes the image look really professional and the colours too I really like them as they stand out and give the image a spooky effect. I also think the photographer may have used photoshop to create the mirror affect in the image.

I liked this image because I want to carry on my project with fantasy theme and this really inspires me as its clearly has a lot of work put into it and I want my finale outcome to be similar in tone and this is why I like this image and want to go on to take more photographs so I can take them onto photoshop and edit them to the best of my ability just like this one.
Coggle mind map to show my first ideas.
First shoot: flowers
BESTThis image is my best image because its been taken really steadily and its really clear and detailed. I also like the blurred back ground as its main focus is on the flower its self.

WORSTThis is my worst image because its not focused at all and its very blurry and difficult to see what it is also the background is blurred which makes it look untidy and not professinal
