Statement of intent.
What is your chosen theme and why have you chosen to study this?
My chosen theme for my GCSE level photography exam is portraits, I will mostly be focusing on the fashion magazine portrait side of photography. I have chosen this theme because I find it really fun and exiting, it also allows me to see what I have learnt throughout the photography course and allows me to improve on what I do wrong and how I can improve and refine my work as I go along.
What research do you intend to carry out based on this theme?
For me to be able to carry this out maybe hard but not impossible and to do this I intend to get ideas from other artist such as Lindsay Adler who is an American portrait and fashion photographer. Her editorials have appeared in Bullet Magazine, Zink Magazine and Fault. She has contributed to photo publications and is now a professional photographer.I aspire to accomplish what she does, her skills in photography is the reason she gets great pictures and for me to do the same I will look deep into her photography and hopefully get a better understanding on whats she uses on her photos. That way it will help me improve on my photography and try out new skills and ideas. When I see how she photoshops her pictures I will try and to the same with my model and create a folder on my web site so I have my journey to getting to what I want.
What photo-shoots do you intend to complete during the project to help explore the chosen topic?
I intend to get multifarious photo-shoots as this will help me maintain my project, (fashion magazine portraits) And help me improve them. For this me and my model will travel different places in Manchester and find great places to take a variety of photos, This could be at our houses near shops or even at school. By doing this it will hopefully give me more ideas on what I am capable of and what I can improve, I am eager to learn more skills and I can do this by reading photographers articles and going into more depth on how they've improved or got to where they are with their photography skills and learn from them.
Which artists Photographers and galleries do you intend to research in order to support this project?
I desire to go to the "photographers gallery in London where they have amazing portraits and images of different artist this is good for me as I will be able to see more amazing portraits which will hopefully drive me to take more photos and carry on this subject in the future.I will also go in more depth with these few fashion magazine portrait artist such as Horst Diekgerdes, Sebastian Kim,Victor Demarchelier, Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca and my favorite Alice Hawkins as she is really insrational and shows a lot of effort in her work and pride.
What techniques with the camera, darkroom and Photoshop would you like to use to help develop the theme?
I will use a variety of techniques with the camera to improve my photos, I will try out different ISO, Apertures and shutter speeds to determine my photos, I might also use different objects to improve the image. I want to compare pictures from a while ago to recent to show my improvements, that way I will be sure on what I want to do with my pictures and how I can apply my knowledge and skills to my work.
What do you hope to learn more about in doing this project?
In this project I really hope to learn more about my theme (fashion magazine portraits) so I can take in new ideas and skills to apply to my work.

Composition:
There a nice bold lines of the horizon right in the middle of the picture there are two bright highlighted colors.
Rule of thirds has been used and because the women's face is at the top of the image it stands out behind the bright pink color.
The use of photoshop has made the image look more enhance and used the cut an paste tool to make the effect of her face floating.
Her hair and make up has also been done which makes the picture look more pleasing.
Looks as as if a tripod was used to create that still image and probably taken with the flashlight and shutter speed.
Overall it is a clear image with easily done editing.

black & white images
I have chosen this method because it looks classy and really eye catching. Also the images have 2 colors meaning the first thing youll look at will be the objects in the picture, It inspires me to use this method in my work so its neat and hooks people in.
fashion magazine
I like this theme as its really professional and clean by clean i mean its really pretty and neat it also hooks people in by the colour. also i think it just makes the picture look really creative and well designed.
photography research
In this picture I can see that its clearly a portrait close up of a womens face, The photographer has also used a lens to make the image look sharp which creates a sweet spot, in this image the eye woould be the sweet spot as it stands out alot and gives that eye catching effect on the reader. The eye level view helps the image stand out as your able to see it clear face to face instead of from miles away or even above it makes the image look neat and clear. In my opinion i think the photographer has used f22 as the image looks really clear with just the top and back part of the image being blurred out.I also think the photographer has used 1600 iso because the image is not dark nor too light its just aboubt perfectly in the middle and the white balance looks to be daylight as the light hint of sun is hitting off the womens face. The image is not over exposed becaue there isnt too much or too less of light and the image is fully clear and we can see whatever is happening in the image. In my opinion I dont think the photographer has used a tripod to capture this picture i think maybe they angled in portrait and went really close to the face to get the picture I think it may have been slightly harder doing it on a stand due to angles. I also highly doubt the photographer used photoshop with this image as its just a natural look and the image just looks professionally taken, if there was any photoshop done with this image I belive it could have been to blur areas on the picture. The main colour in this image is ginger/orange and green, the two colours work extremly well together as the green eyes look and stand out beautifully and the orange freckled and hair both almost blend in together and create a really clear presentable image. The image has also been cropped so that only half of the womens face is visible and the other half isnt there,The shadow of the flower on her face stands out almost imediently as its in the view of the image and probably the first thing you may look at, The flowers really go with the image making it project and look superior.
I personally like this image because it just looks imcaulate and neat, its also the only one that really caught my eye and made me want to write about it, clearly the photographer has taken their time with this image it doesnt look rushed or blurry, Its a steady taken image and shows just how beautifully humans were made and taken time on. I want this work to link to mine as I really like taking close eye view photos as it gets every detail on the image and makes it look outstanding and really presentable for people to see. In this image the strenghths are obvious and Id say are, the image being clear and neat and how the photographer has used the right camera lens to capture this amazing photograph.
In my opinion I think maybe if the photographer tried to take a full face image it wouldve looked astonishing. I would very much like to achive this sort of image as I think its really beautiful and noticable and if I was to do this id be able to achive a great outcome as I like taking close up images and getting every last bit of detail in the image too, I would most likely go for this type of photo, a close up on a face as it just really brightens the image up and would look good on my weebly with a great description on how I came about taking it. I belive by seeing this image its going to encourage me to take more portait close ups and practice getting a good outcome to achive the grade I want.

In the image I can see by the women facial expressions that she seems worried and hurt and I can see this because the photographer has taken this image really carefully to get all details. I think the image says a lot of things,Also the image colour is black and white this could be because back in the olden times they didn't really have colour also I don't think this was taken on a digital camera but a film this is a really unique way to present a image. The white balance on this picture looks like its daylight this is a good technique to use as it helps the photo to stand out.The photographer has also focused 1 third of the image on the women, 2 third of the child on the left and 3 thirds of the image on the 2 children on the left side of the image. The photographer has angled this image so its in the shape of the triangle because you can see the mother and children they all fit perfectly in a triangle this is because they are grouped.
the two colours black and white are really useful in the image as you wont be hooked in by the range of colours in the image but only one so you tend to look more at the people or object in the image.I also like how her eyes are in the sweet spot you look straight into her eyes and can see a million reasons to why she might look scared or anxious. The picture makes me feel sorrow for the women and her children because of the way she looks she is not staring at the image but shes looking away which can show she may be looking at something more traumatizing. In my opinion i think this image is really iconic and eye catching as the image is literally taken in the moment and not I been planned to be taken, I like this because you can really see the story behind the image and it can make you really see the truth in reality.

The structure that i can see is a triangle where the mother is and where the children are resting on her head. This triangle shows a lot of emotion because they are scared and worrying. This image i can see was taken back in 1936 because from the colour of the picture you can tell it looks old fashioned. I think this was because it is filmed on a filming camera in the early 1900's.There is 4 people in the picture, A mother ,A baby and 2 children. In the background it is blurred so we cant really see what it is however it looks plain and blank like the facial expressions on the women's face.
Connection
This Theme is The Great Depression.
This image does link to my theme as ill be using this theme in my work. Also this image was taken on a filming camera this is because back in the 19s there wasn't really any digital cameras.
I think there is a message behind this image you can tell in the women eyes and the children faces because her eyes say a million words.
Also it is a black and white image and its cool because it also shows sorrow.

Comment
I like this image because you can just see from the women eyes how she feels and you can also see by the children's body that they could be hiding from the things going around them and the mum looks like the shield protecting the kids. Also you can tell they're in a group this is a harsh image to look at as you can also see the baby in the mothers arms which presents rule of third as its on one side.By this you can tell the mother is trying to shelter her baby and keep him safe.
Planning my first photography shoot for my portrait project.
My first starting point is taking inspiration from a vogue magazine cover.I like this theme because its really unique and interesting also very creative by the makeup and flowers around the head.To be able to make this work i would need to use Photoshop, And a good background. my model for this is going to be a young British female.A few other things i would like to use is some props including make-up flowers and other small and large objects maybe a torch for a brighter picture and to make it stand out. Also i would want a plain back ground either white or any other light colour.
The equipment I'm going to use is a DSLR Camera and also use a tripod to keep my images still and steady so it focuses on my model because if the image is blurry or unclear it wont look presentable or nice. I'm also looking to use the infinity curve for my back ground for a smooth light and adjusted back ground and so it doesn't look scruffy. I am also going to use a reflector either a grey or golden one so that i can get a golden reflection on my model. For Lights I want to use a umbrella reflector this is because it will make the photo really stand out and look professional but most of all make my model look presentable. And I am also planning to use some fairy lights to make the picture look eye catching.

Evaluation-
My main project theme was portrait, however I went onto a different path & did a mix of things including magazine covers & photo shopping. I think it was successful as I had 3 outcomes which I was happy with & thought were really good as it was my first time using Photoshop.
The part I enjoyed the most in photography & in this project would've been taking the pictures of my model & developing it with Photoshop. I found it really good how I learnt so much in a short period of time and I knew how to make amazing edits, I think it was really interesting.
I Learnt loads of new techniques in this project and in Photoshop I learnt different ways to take pictures with my camera and what equipment to use. I also learnt many ways how to edit pictures, For example I used the pen tool which gave the amazing cut effect on my models face, I really enjoyed that technique and that is why I decided to make two of the edits of my model.
The photographer that I researched in the project were Dorothea Lang, she had a really good image with black and white pictures.
This inspired me to do the same in one of my work pieces, I really liked the set out of her image it showed emotions and many more stories and I really liked it and wanted to try it out myself.
The technique I probably enjoyed the most was the Photoshopping because I found it really interesting it also gave me ways to improve my work as it had many tools that I could have used. I also thought it was quite fun as well just experimenting with new things all the time, it was good.
Again I think my most successful project was the Photoshop image, I really had fun making it and I really enjoyed the project, overall it was a good success because I liked it and I tried my hardest to make it look great and I was really impressed with my last and finale outcome.
The only problem I may have had in this project was following the tutorial as it was really confusing and I had to be focused on it at all times.
The little things you miss could have made a big difference and could have ruined my work overall I also made a few mistakes but got back on track and didn't give up which made me come to my finale outcome which I was happy about.
What i would do differently is probably keep in track of the time and make sure I focus and don't get distracted really easily because the little moment I didn't focus I could've missed out a lot of information and maybe could've learnt more than I know already. This may have benefit my in many ways in my project and in my 3 finale outcomes as a whole however I was happy with my results.
